August 15th is one of the biggest weekends for tourism in France. It’s the height of the summer holidays and a long weekend which pretty much guarantees everyone who can get away will do.

It’s a date that those who work in the tourist industry look forward to, but far less so this year as hotel owners, museum managers and restaurant workers all know that many of the usual visitors will stay away.

Libyan forces recapture key Islamic State group base in Sirte

Libyan forces battling to oust Islamic State (IS) from Sirte said they had made major advances on Wednesday, capturing a convention centre previously used as a base by the jihadist group, as well as the city’s university and hospital.

“Our forces have complete control of the whole of the Ouagadougou (convention) complex - they even advanced some distance beyond the complex,” said Rida Issa, a spokesman in the forces’ media office.

Britain’s Serious Fraud Office has launched a formal investigation into suspected fraud, bribery and corruption in connection with commercial plane sales by Airbus, parent company Airbus Group said on Sunday.

A UK government agency this year suspended the issue of export credits toAirbus, citing discrepancies in declarations by the plane maker on the use of third-party intermediaries during jet sale negotiations.

PNP decomisó 1,2 toneladas de droga y parte iba hacia Francia

La Policía Nacional del Perú (PNP) informó este miércoles de la incautación de 1,2 toneladas de droga en recientes operaciones, parte de ella hallada dentro de un contenedor marítimo que iba a ser embarcado hacia Francia.

En la operación realizada en el puerto del Callao, agentes de la Dirección Antidrogas (Dirandro) detectaron cinco maletines con 21 paquetes de cocaína, con un peso de 254 kilos.

Los maletines "estaban en un container, (donde) había dos camionetas usadas que estaban siendo enviadas a Francia, pero al hacerles el registro correspondiente, en la parte de atrás había gran cantidad de droga", dijo a la prensa el general Luis Pantoja, jefe de la Dirandro.

France’s prisons system is in crisis, mainly due to the fact that it has more inmates in its jails than ever before.

In July authorities counted 69,375 prisoners compared to 58,311 official places available in the country’s 188 prisons.

One of the prisons, Fleury-Mérogis to the south of Paris, is the biggest in Europe. It was built to house 2,857 prisoners, but now has 4,539 under its roof.
